Today, on Nigel Tufnel Day, let’s all donate $11.11 to a food bank in tribute to “This Is Spinal Tap”

By on November 11, 2015

Today — November 11th, or 11/11 — is Nigel Tufnel Day, so declared a sacred day in 2010 by musician and Night Flight friend Michael Fennelly, who came up with the idea as a way to pay tribute to one of his (and our) favorite mockumentaries, This Is Spinal Tap.

If you’re already a fan of the movie, you no doubt recognize that Nigel Tufnel is the band’s guitarist, who in one memorable scene shows off how his guitar amps are tricked out with volume dials that go up to eleven (one notch higher than most amps, which only go to ten).

More importantly, however, Fennelly is using Nigel Tufnel Day to highlight the problem of hunger in the United States, and so, we here at Night Flight, along with Fennelly Declare 11/11/11 Nigel Tufnel Day Facebook community group, encourage you to donate $11.11 (or any amount you wish) in Nigel Tufnel’s honor (or actor/writer/producer Christopher Guest or anyone’s honor, really — it’s also Veteran’s Day, friends) to a food bank today.

We donated to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization, who tell us that $1 donated distributes enough food for four meals to hungry children, seniors and families.

Michael Fennelly

We’ve featured Fennelly here on Night Flight before — his band Crabby Appleton, appeared in episode #19 too, lip-syncing their hit Go Back,” which we told you about here, and he’s mentioned is this post about the alternate Midnight Cowboy soundtrack too.

Today, Fennelly provided the following to Night Flight:

“The Declare 11/11/11 Nigel Tufnel Day group page on Facebook was an idea I had in November 2010. It went viral as soon as I established it, with thousands joining and posting their favorite lines and images from This Is Spinal Tap.

It seemed like a good idea to add some purpose to the fun, so we started having food bank drives and encouraging members to donate $11.11 to their local organizations in honor of Nigel Tufnel. The classic ‘small bread‘ scene from the film underscored our efforts, and we’ve raise many thousands of dollars over the past five years.”

Fennelly says that, as of 11/11/11, “We had about 23,300 members. It’s hard to pin down just how much was donated – because people clicked ‘attending’ but surely not all of them actually gave to food banks. Some give $111.11! But $10,000 donated over the past five years would probably be a reasonable estimate. We have these events a couple of times a year.”

NIGEL TUFNEL DAY 3

Fennelly had additional comments about the film itself when he was mentioned in a Huffington Post article in 2011: “There is a certain beauty to the perfect stupidity of Spinal Tap,” said Fennelly, who has sung with groups like Steely Dan and Crabby Appleton, which had a top 40 hit in the 1970s with “Go Back.” “So much of what happens in the movie is true that many musicians feel pangs while watching it because basically your whole career is mocked.”

The Feeding America nationwide network of food banks secures and distributes more than 3 billion meals each year to communities throughout the United States and leads the nation to engage in the fight against hunger.
