Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups

By on March 4, 2015

Terrence Malick’s follow up to 2012’s To The Wonder now has a title. For quite some time the film gathered significant interest as “Untitled Terrance Malick” on a long list of A-list IMDB pages including Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Ben Kingsley.

From the look of the trailer, Knight of Cups lives inside the same drifting-camera love-story epic of his last two projects. The film stars Christian Bale as a screenwriter in LA, churned up by the excesses of Hollywood life and responding to surreal events that befall him. It’s Lynchian in tone, and some of the scenes from the trailer suggest a more sinister undercurrent to this film.

According to Bale at the film’s press conference and premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, the process of making the film was experimental.  Bale himself didn’t have any lines and during shooting Malick would “torpedo” the cast with actors and non actors alike to build drama and tension. We’re looking forward to seeing the results.
