Pussy Riot at Dismaland: This new politically-charged video is dedicated to refugees fleeing Syria & other war-torn countries

By on November 18, 2015

Have a look at this awesome new politically-charged music video for Pussy Riot’s “Refugees In” — with lyrics like “Bombing people out of homes / We want peace, not fucking drones” -- which includes footage of the performance art piece/song the band/performance group staged with London-based art-group the Connor Brothers (Mike Snelle and James Golding), and which included fake protesters and riot police.

It was filmed live, on September 25th, at Banksy’s Dismaland, which we told you about here. The video, for explicit language, is slightly NSFW, depending on where you work.

The video — with generous help from director Ralf Schmerberg and music producers Tev Nev, bretonLABS and additional production by Alexander Parsons — is dedicated to the refugees arriving into Europe from Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan and other war-torn countries.

Here’s what it says at the Youtube clip, hosted by Pussy Riot:

Today’s Europe faces a big new challenge. The current refugee crisis, will become a defining issue of our generation. Pussy Riot feel this European challenge as our own. 750,000 refugees have arrived in Europe so far in 2015. Many more are coming. They are mostly escaping from war or persecution in Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq, Sudan. Thousands are dying on the way. In the UK refugees cannot apply for asylum from outside the country – so they are forced to travel there illegally.

Why can’t we live in a truly global world, not one with one with locked borders, razor wires and refugee camps? History has shown that migrants can be are innovative and entrepreneurial. Look at the US for an example of a whole culture built on the input of immigrants. Thousands of ordinary people across Europe are trying to help, but most governments are not matching their efforts. We believe in solidarity with human beings in need, wherever they are from, whatever their background. This is not a question of politics or nationality, but of saving human lives.

“Refugees In” is one of several videos that Pussy Riot intends to release in the next year. Pussy Riot member Nadya Tolokonnikova recently said about them: “We are planning to release a lot of disturbing videos next year. We hope that you will not like them.”

Pussy Riot recently told Rolling Stone: “Regardless of one’s political views, we have a moral duty to offer refuge to people fleeing war and persecution. We recognize the challenge faced by Europe in accepting hundreds of thousands of displaced people, but this is more than a political challenge – it is a humanitarian crisis and as such we must act together and rise to the challenge.”

The Connor Brothers — who have started the NGO “Refugee Response Foundation” to help refugees in Calais, a port city in northern France, it’s the principal ferry crossing point between France and England — will visit Calais in January to build shelters in association with students from the architecture department at Cambridge University to help the housing problem.
