Style Wars: The Classic Hip-Hop Documentary Arrives

When director Tony Silver and co-producer Henry Chalfant delivered the broadcast version of their prize-winning film to PBS in 1983, the world received its first full immersion in the phenomenon that had taken over New York City.

In Style Wars, New York’s ramshackle subway system is a public playground, battleground, and spectacular artistic canvas. As MC’s, DJ’s and B-boys rock the city with new sounds and new moves, we see street corner breakdance battles turn into performance art.

Watch it tonight on Night Flight Plus!

Night Flight Looks At Rap Style (1988)

As a perfect companion to Style Wars, here’s this week’s Original Night Flight offering. In this episode from 1988, Night Flight highlights the sound and style of Rap.

“Born in the inner-city, now commercially accepted the world over rap made its social statement with a look, as well as a sound,” Pat Prescott explains.

Dig in with a classic tune from Jamaican born Shinehead, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “The Message,” Run DMC’s heavy guitar hybrid track “Rock Box,” Night Flight favorites The Fat Boys and more.

Thompson Twins and Viewers Choice: A Closer Look

On the blog: For this exceptional episode of Night Flight’s “Most Requested Videos” — which originally aired on June 14, 1986 — viewers had mailed postcards and letters to our New York HQ, requesting to see videos by some of their favorite artists, including the Thompson Twins’ version of the Beatles‘ 1968 hit “Revolution.”

Have a look at what other videos they wanted to see over at Night Flight Plus and read our full story on the Thompson Twins here.
