New Arrival: Kraftwerk and The Electronic Revolution

As innovative as they are influential, Kraftwerk’s contribution to the development of electronic music since their formation in 1970 remains unsurpassed. This new film on Night Flight Plus reviews the career and music of Kraftwerk, from their inception in the late 1960s (as pre-Kraftwerk ensemble Organization), through their most celebrated period in the mid 1970s, and culminating with their resurgence during the 1980s with the popularity of synth-pop and techno. Take Off to Self-Destruction (1986)

In Take Off To Self-Destruction (1986), Night Flight focuses on some of the darker elements that defined the 1980s. Featured songs like “Stop The Madness” and “Just Say No” convey a conflicted range of emotion when watched today. They’re amusing in their categorically ‘80s presentation, but also require a certain cynical reflection on the ineffective and corrosive drug policies promoted by the Reagans.

Along with artist interviews and PSA interstitials (including a brilliant one from Frank Zappa), this episode features videos from Armband, Jazzy Jeff, Fine Young Cannibals and more.

David Bowie’s “Ashes To Ashes” for the final video in the segment proves that Night Flight was willing to take on uncomfortable topics like drug abuse and suicide with an elegance you couldn’t find anywhere else on TV at the time.
