Moby’s “Alien Sex Party,” a comic frenzy filled with sexual innuendo, music & science fiction

By on April 17, 2019

The action, if that’s what you call it, in the overtly NSFW Moby Presents: Alien Sex Party — originally titled Porno, which likely would have got this movie misfiled on the wrong shelf, let alone made theatrical distribution difficult — takes place on Christmas Eve at an adult video store called Amazing Video on the night of a meet-and-greet with visiting porn star actress “Dyanna Lauren” (playing herself).

ALIENSEXPARTY16

Executive produced by electronic musician Moby, who contributes original music, Alien Sex Party — somewhat accurately described on the back of the VHS tape box as “a comic frenzy filled with sexual innuendo, music, science fiction and all combinations thereof” — can be found in our Comedy Movies section over on Night Flight Plus.

Alien Sex Party — which features a sub-plot involving K-Y jelly-based UFO aliens on the lam, which is where the title comes from — presents quite a cast of oddball characters who venture in and out of Amazing Video all night long.

They mostly come up to the register and chat about random sex-related topics while making their purchases of KY jelly lube or “kitty porn” (careful: we’re talkin’ feline porn here, not kiddie porn).

The shop’s easily-excitable, germ-o-phobic owner is a prudish guy named “Joe” (Joe Smith), who has recently inherited the store from his much-wilder late sister.

Joe appears to be pretty freaked out by a lot of the store merchandise the customers bring up to the front counter, but we don’t actually believe he’s actually acting. (Joe also plays his own twin brother “Harry”).

ALIENSEXPARTY6

There’s also a sexy and somewhat promiscuous Santa hat-clad store manager named “Tina” (Tina Carlucci), who obviously enjoys her work (at one point she shows her boss the proper way to use a strap-on).

She loves talking non-stop about anything related to sex, including frankly vivid descriptions of her various past sexual encounters (including that time she fucked her own brother).

ALIENSEXPARTY13

Tina’s burning question of the day, though, happens to be whether or not a cranky dismissive store clerk named “Adam” (Adam Sarner) — her semi-estranged ex-boyfriend and, oh boy, get this!, he’s also her cousin — has a crush on his precocious eighteen year old niece “Grace” (Grace Creech), because she might, in fact, actually have one on him.

ALIENSEXPARTY10

There’s also a light-in-the-loafers singing/dancing gay couple, “Dean” (Dean Haspiel) and “Christian” (Christian Ulrich), who pretend to be the store’s security team for some odd reason.

You’re not going to want to miss their song & dance number, “You Can Have Sex With Anything You Want.”

The endless parade of quirky customers also includes a mad bomber, a nerdy Trekkie named “Mario,” and various other porn-obsessed freaks, many of whom are choosing to spend Christmas Eve at Amazing Video simply to meet Ms. Lauren.

At one point, a trio of underwear-clad punks calling themselves Ricco’s Roughnecks set up in the store, breaking into the song “Fuck Christmas, Fuck You!,” a holiday ditty we promise you’ll soon be singing to yourself.

ALIENSEXPARTY15

Some of the notable cameo appearances include Peter Prescott, the drummer from Mission of Burma; members of the Upper Crust; Fancy from the band FannyPack; Steve St. Croix (as “Santa”); the Pork Guys; the Zambonis, with Peter Katis and the Leevees’ Dave Schneideer; Leon Dewan and the Happiest Guys in the World.

In an obvious nod of homage to Kevin Smith’s successful 1994 indie film Clerks — either that, or this is a blatant rip-off — you can expect to see all kinds of crazy characters doing all kinds of outrageous things in Alien Sex Party.

At one point, in fact, we even enter a QuickStop store to find Clerks actor Brian O’Halloran reprising his retail clerk role of “Dante.” O’Halloran tells Adam & Tina about that time his girlfriend gave head to thirty-seven men.

ALIENSEXPARTY12

Alien Sex Party strings together a bunch of comical vignettes and loosely-related set pieces, occasionally presented in split-screen, with occasional breakaways for silly little music videos.

Prior to taking on this film project, shot on 16mm — and much like Adam Dubin, the director of Drop Dead Rock, another low-budget comedy you’ll also find streaming in our Comedy Film section on Night Flight Plus — director Paul Francis Sanchez Yates was, in fact, a video director, working with Moby, R.E.M. the Dandy Warhols and others.

ALIENSEXPARTY4

We’ve read that sometime after this film premiered at the Silver Lake Film Festival on September 19, 2001, and was given wider release in January 2002, Moby tried to disavow any knowledge of the film even existing, despite the film being released with “Moby Presents” right there at the front of the title.

Moby, we should mention, also shows up in the film a scene-stealing cameo as a guitar-playing character with dildos strapped to his bald head who is called, what else?, “Dildo Head.”

ALIENSEXPARTY17

Also, according to a December 2000 “Trash Talk” entry published in Spin magazine, Yates was so angry that Moby had distanced himself from the film — launching what Yates called a “falsified smear campaign” — that he auctioned off Moby’s “eternal soul” on eBay.

We’re not sure how Yates came to be in possession of Moby’s eternal soul, but we’re sure it was totally legit.

The winning bid, by the way, was just $42.

ALIENSEXPARTY11

At the time, Moby’s management company told Time magazine that he “no longer agrees with the film creatively,” but we’ve read that since then Yates and Moby have put their differences behind them.
