Meat Loaf did Shakespeare Motor City Style

In this exclusive interview with Night Flight in 1983, a candid Meat Loaf describes the rock star ethos through the lens of Shakespeare, saying “Rock and roll is a state of mind, rock and roll is in your heart… I did shakespeare with the Motor City Rock and Roll energetic drive.”

Now, while looking at him Meat Loaf (born Marvin Lee Aday) might not be your run of the mill community theatre candidate, but it is well known that Aday was deep into theatre early on and took inspiration from it throughout his career. In fact, the meta-narrative locked inside Loaf’s classic record Bat Out Of Hell was actually inspired by a musical sci-fi update to Peter Pan.
