#78: 2 Become 1 -The Spice Girls

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U-ih-Jq79w

(Vid embedding disabled…shucks)

I’m not trying to be ironic or weird with this one at all. I had a spice rack in my kitchen about 12 years ago, it was covered in Spice Girl stickers, and housed their first 2 cd’s. This was a cheap joke because I worked at a record store, and there were always used copies in the bin. Totally worth it.

I was so perplexed by the fame of this group at the time. it made no sense how so many people around me fell for these strange older british ladies, and I really do try to give everything an honest chance, I just couldn’t understand the fascination (still can’t with a bunch: Oasis, Gene Loves Jezebel, Cirith Ungol, etc…)….

Cut to a few months later and I find myself in a movie theater on the opening day of SPICEWORLD, genuinely stoked to see the movie, more stoked than my girlfriend! What the fuck? What happened to my brain? How did this dumb joke of mine turn into “ohmygod!ohmygod!ohmygod!” fandom? Shortly after this happened, I saw the video for 2 Become 1 and it was all clear to me, sure, their voices are horrible garbage, and the programmed music is mediocre at best, but that wasn’t it, it was the lyrics! The lyrics are hyper suggestive which caught me first, middle, and last! These Spiced Girls are basically saying “tonight, dude, we’re gunna fuck! it’s not open for discussion” then the video itself, with that, them trapped in this slow dimension while time races around them thing.. it really fucked me up.. way more.. but in a good way more. Look out for the group-one-by-one looking up at you eye thing they do at the end, it’s during the awesome string breakdown! shiiiiiiit. I love you ginger spice.

#77: Two Princes – Spin Doctors

You jerks probably think that I should have put ‘Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong’ on this list instead. No way! This is the hit for a reason. Anytime I’m having ‘the best day ever’, this song is playing on repeat in my head the whole time.

#76: Secret Sex Friend- Free Kitten

Back in the day I was one of those dorks that thought Free Kitten was the shit. But: they kind of are. Who knew how much punk angst women in their forties could dish out?

#73: So Into You – Tamia

I’m not kidding and don’t fucking judge me. This is a good song. Just because you dance to it with your hands up in the air, gently snapping your fingers doesn’t mean it’s not good.

#72: With Arms Wide Open – Creed

I have to admit I’m kind of biased with this one because I got a
personal relationship with Creed. Scott Stapp and me were in youth
group together at the Grace Covenant Baptist Church in Orlando,
Florida in 1991 and even then I knew Scott was destined to do huge
things in His name.
